The Genesis of Open AI

OpenAI was established in the year 2015 by a group of renowned tech giants such as Elon Musk (Founder of SpaceX, CEO of Tesla), Sam Altman (Cofounder of Initialized Capital and former president of Y Combinator), Greg Brockman (former CTO of Stripe) but just to name a few. They viewed AI as having the potential to revolutionize society and felt that it was crucially important for it to be utilised and controlled in a manner that benefits all of humanity.

Ownership Structure of Open AI

Open AI was initially set up as a non-profit, with its founding charter aiming to ensure any influence over the organization’s operations would be utilized for the broader benefit of all, and to avert the use of AI technology for harmful purposes or merely to concentrate power. However, in 2019, OpenAI transitioned to a capped-profit model, with most of its efforts being run through for-profit OpenAI LP, managed by non-profit OpenAI Inc.

The OpenAI LP model enables it to draw on much-needed capital for the enormous resources required to achieve its mission while still remaining steadfast to its uncompromising fiduciary duty to humanity. In this structure, any returns to employees and investors are capped, with the lion’s share of benefits (beyond the cap) reserved for the common good.

Essentially, the principals or ‘owners’ of OpenAI, are the employees, an investor syndicate for each round of funding, and humanity at large, as the primary fiduciary duty of OpenAI is its mission to ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits everyone.
